After completing an MA Hons in archaeology at Edinburgh University, I studied journalism at City University in London, before joining the financial pages of The Scotsman in London, followed by a spell with the Daily Express and then a move to the Times.
At The Times, I pioneered a new kind of interview with FTSE100 chairman and chief executives. I was promoted to deputy editor of The Times Diary and then acting editor, which gave me an opportunity to attend editor’s daily conference.
Marriage and a move to Scotland followed. I was appointed Scottish correspondent of The Times, before taking up the role of deputy editor (features) at Sunday Times Scotland. I turned round the ailing Ecosse supplement and under my editorship Allan Brown and Joan McAlpine won journalist of the year at the Scottish Press Awards in consecutive years.
After having my third child, I returned to writing and, with the exception of a short interlude at the Scotsman, I have written a weekly current affairs column and features for The Sunday Times. Interview subjects have included: David Cameron, The Dalai Lama, Richard Branson, Dame Muriel Spark, Robert Carlyle, Sir Terence Conran, Alex Salmond, Lulu, David Davies, Ian Rankin and Alexander McCall Smith.
I have been name feature writer of the year twice, columnist of the year and team of the year. In addition to writing I co founded the fine jewellery brand Lily Blanche and the Scottish gift brand Tartan Twist before taking full control of their parent company Wow (Scotland) Ltd. The brands are thriving and we have built two highly successful ecommerce websites.
